Social Networking Debate

I believe that social networking is mostly beneficial to use because you can get help from others and you get to know or learn new stuff. Yes, much time is wasted in social networking, but some of the time is used usefully. This is mainly based from Facebook since it is the most popular social networking site.

One way social networking is beneficial is you find out about current events or things that have happened around the community. This is helpful or beneficial because you get informed from what is happening around you. This would alarm you to try and stay safe if something bad has happened around you. This would also tell you about events you would like to attend some time. Here is a quote that states about posts,

More than 30 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc.) shared each month.

This quote or static means a few things. This means that there are tons of new stories or current events published onto social networking sites. You can learn what has happened in different places. From the US, Germany, Italy, and so on. Also a few people link their blogs on Facebook so they can know about a few different things. This gives you many options to learn or know about.

Another way social networking is beneficial is you can get help from other people, friends. Sometimes people do not have each others numbers, what do you do. You add them on Facebook and ask them for help. I believe that help from Facebook or any social networking site is better than texting because it is more faster.

One supposed goal for Facebook is to unite the world as stated here,

Facebook's mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.

This quote states that the goal  for Facebook is to simply let people connect and share stuff each other. It also says "make the world more open" which I believe means as more tolerant or helpful. This goal seems like it has been reached because many many people have a Facebook. Many people stay connected and share stuff through Facebook. I also believe that the world could stay connected with each other because you can learn and talk to other people around the world.

Response to Shiyun

I found this quote from Shiyun Yang blog that was interesting. I thought this quote was interesting because it was about school and stress. Here is the following quote.

Most high school students are pressured to get the best grades in the class and get accepted into the best colleges. They would spent most of their time studying and reading most of the time. Studying is good, but too much of it can make you very stressful. We need to take a break sometimes and just let our selfs relax and do things that we enjoy; even hanging out with our family and friend. We should enjoy the time that we have until we become adults. We should reserve some time to have some fun and laugh with friends. Still if we have too much fun, its also not so good. We should average out our lives and not do more of one thing.

I really agree with this quote. Many people try too hard too keep up with their grades, which is not bad. But if you push yourself too far or past the limit, you need to chill. Stress is not the best feeling, maybe even one of the worst feelings. During stress it feels like you can not do anything. Stress comes with plenty of headaches. It really is not that necessary to push yourself until breaking point. Sometimes you need to just chill, hang out, and let loose. On the contrary from stress, letting loose is if not the best feeling ever, at least for me.

All assignments do not have to be done. Now I am not saying to not do your homework. Do your homework as much s you can, but sometimes you get tired and need a break. Sometimes I just do not do the assignments because I am tired or stressed. While you are stressed, the quality of your would not be good, so why do it. Also it is not always about work, you need some fun. Hang out with friends, they may help you in some assignment later on.

Elite Colleges

There are elite colleges, and then there are the other colleges. Many people think of colleges as this. I believe that most or maybe even all colleges are the same. They may have their differences but have many things that are similar. Different colleges offer different courses or degrees that other colleges may not have. For example, a college in Michigan might offer a farming course, while Harvard does not have that course. It all depends on the person. Anyone can do well as long as they try and use their time wisely.

I read all the debate posts, and I liked some more then others. In particular I liked and agreed with Martha (Marty) O'Conell post of What You Do vs. Where You Go. She had very convincing points. I agreed with most of what she believes. In summary, she believes that it does not matter where you attend college.  Here is a quote from her post.

The key to success in college and beyond has more to do with what students do with their time during college than where they choose to attend.

I agree with her. You will get the same education from any college as long as you choose to use your time wisely. If you go to Harvard or some other elite college, and you do not use your time wisely, well of course you would not learn. Same thing goes with any other college, as long as you try in a college you will get the same thing out of it as an elite college.

Researchers found that students who applied to several elite schools but didn't attend them -- either because of rejection or by their own choice -- are more likely to earn high incomes later than students who actually attended elite schools

Here she puts in evidence that some people do well even if they did not go to an elite school. Everyone can have a successful or happy life, it just depends on what they want to do.

Some debate posts on elite colleges were not convincing. One example of this was Luis Fuentes-Rohwer post of Merit and Race. He did not convince me. In summary, he believes it does matter of what college you go to. Here is a quote from his post.

Attendance at elite colleges and universities has a positive effect on the likelihood that a student will graduate; on future earnings; on the likelihood that a student will attend graduate school; and even to lower divorce rates and better health.

 Even though this information might be true, it could also be true for any other college. It all depends on the student. I believe that everything is on the student whether he or she tries and uses his time wisely.

Dance Dance

Many people like to dance, and some do not. Some dance just at parties and for fun. Other people practice certain types of dances.

There are many types of dances. There is C-Walking, Turfing, Popping, Breakdancing (B-boying), Giggin, Locking, Bone Breaking, Jerking, and so on. There are so many styles and types of dances out there, but these are the main ones that I hear about. Many people, and I mean many people do these dances. At times, these dances are considered "dead" or that they are "dying out". This means that it is like out of style or old. Most of these dances come with a certain slang or "uniform" (style of clothes). What all of these dances can agree with is the ultimate way of dancing, "killing the beat". This means like dancing with the beat or doing moves with the music.

At times I think that there are too many people doing a certain type of dance. Some just do it because their friends do it, or because it is popular. But if they like to dance it, go ahead and do it. One dance that has been popular in Oakland or the Bay Area is turfing. I personally like this dance. I like this one because it like incorporates Popping, Locking, Giggin, Bone Breaking, and moves from B-boying. This makes the dance more different or similar by the way you see it. It makes it different by being able to do many different moves instead of the same ones. It makes it similar because it comes from old types of dances and combines them. One dance that amuses me and almost every person is Breakdancing (B-boying). Some people consider this not a dance, but it is. This type of dance has many styles within the dance. Many people are amused from this dance because it involves somewhat acrobatic moves.

I like most types of dances, but others do not catch my attention. One type of dance that I never really got into was Jerking. Now before you get mad, I am not hating on Jerking. Since no one around me where I live "Jerked", I never got into it.  Jerking to me is all the same moves or tricks. I understand sometimes you can or have to do the same moves, but Jerking is all about continuously doing the same moves. What I did not like about the Jerking movement was that most people thought that they brought back skinny jeans and bright color. No, skinny jeans were being worn before the jerking movement, in particular skaters were wearing skinny jeans. From what I know of is that everyone once in a while likes to wear bright colors, so how could the Jerking movement have brought that back when it was still alive.

Response to God Bless Alameda

So I was looking over reader and I found a response that was interesting. This was a response from Rokhsor to Aleah that was talking about Alameda.

I am shocked. If anything, Alameda is the coolest place to be and just because you do not like it here, does not make it dumb or stupid or anything like that. I am tired of people calling Alameda bad names. If you do not like it, then do not talk about it. It is as simple as that. Just because people live in Oakland and it’s where all the “cool people” live, does not make everywhere else dumb...First of all, if Alameda is bootsy, then what are you doing at an Alameda school? I am not trying to sound rude at all but it is the first question that popped up in my head. Since Alameda is bootsy, then you might as well find a good school at Oakland. Oh yeah, since it is so much better than Alameda, then it shouldn’t be that hard to find a good school in Oakland that is offering the same kind of things that ASTI is.

Ok. Before I start, I want others to know that I am not trying to take any sides, this is just my opinion. So, some people might know I live in Oakland, so I probably might be biased towards Oakland.  I have never lived in Alameda so I do not really know how it is. I also do not really hang out in Alameda as much.


 I agree with Rokhsor that Alameda is a nice place that is not stupid or dumb. I like to kid around with Rokhsor saying that Oakland is better, but she does have some points. If Oakland is so cool, why would you go to school to Alameda. This was the thing that always got to me because it is true, why would I go to school in Alameda? I still don't even have a good complete answer for that question. One thing I did not really agree with was this. By the way I read it, you are trying to say that there are no good schools in Oakland. If you are trying to say that, I could differ. There are many schools all over Oakland, and all of them have a different styles of teaching and just a different style overall. All schools are good in their own way, some help more in different ways. 


I love Oakland, but I also like Alameda. Alameda is a nice place to chill and be safe. Even though I like Alameda, there are some things I dislike. From what I heard is that Alameda is turning "ghetto". I thought this was funny because you can not really turn ghetto out of the blue, especially Alameda. Maybe it could, but have some doubts about it. It is more like there are people in Alameda who are ghetto, not Alameda is turning ghetto. Last thought, I would prefer to live in Oakland than Alameda just because I have not really experienced Alameda as much. If I did live there, then maybe it would be the other way around.  Merry Christmas and New Years to everyone. :)

LCD #3 The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

So I just finished reading this book and I can say many things about it. First of all, at first I was not really interested in it, but reading a few pages, I was hooked. This book has a writing style that is very unique that hooks you immediately. It was really well written from characters, to the plot, to the conflicts. The main conflict was throughout the whole book. I am happy to say that I feel like I read a book about an autistic kid that overcomes many things and grows to be more matures. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a short engaging book.

Today's discussion was at it's best from the past weeks. We had many more options to talk about in the book since we read the whole book. We talked about a few things. We talked about things we did not really understand. We also discussed about Christopher being with his mother and father. Also since Christopher has had many encounters with the police, we talked about the police. We talked about how police compare and contrast from different countries, cities, regions, years and etc.

One point that was brought up many times in all the the discussions was the comparison with this book and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. If may not know, this book was also great. I recommend Of Mice and Men also. Anyways, some group mates were bringing up this point. They said that two of the main characters are very similar, Lennie and Christopher. Both characters have a certain illness were they act like a kid or do not understand things very well. Some keys things is that they both like dogs. During both book, they get to interact or have a dog, and they both love their dogs.

This discussion was a great one, too bad it is the last one for this book. Last comment of book, buy it, borrow it, anything; just read it. This will be the last post for this book, bye bye book. I am looking forward to another discussion about other books or anything else. Since this might be one of the last posts of the year, I would like to leave with a Happy Christmas and Happy New Years everyone. :)

LCD #2 The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

So far, the book has been great. It has been very original and interesting to read. It feels as if it were really written by an autistic kid. I am almost till the end of the book. Many things have happened and finally we found out who the killer of the dog is. By now, I sort of feel like I understand the main character, Christopher, or like as if I know him. this book is very well-written. Almost done with the book. Two thirds finished, one third left to go.

This week's discussion was better from last times I believe. This week, I actually participated some in the discussion. I asked questions, answered some questions and used some quotes. We all participated which made the discussion really interesting and better than last weeks'. Some questions that came up during the discussion were about the plot, characters and about autistic people. These were the main things in our discussion. One example of these questions was," How do police in England deal with autistic kids?" One thing that stood out to me. While we discussed about what was going to happen next into the book, Christian popped in and and claimed something significant. He said," In the beginning, Christopher was talking about mystery novels. He said that the best mystery novels you could find out in the middle of the book. Later on in the book or in the middle of the book, you find out who the killer is." This was very interesting because it was really true.

This discussion brought me to some questions. I still have some questions about autistic people. Before, I did not know that much about autistic kids, but now I am sensing sort of how they are. Also, I have questions about how England is or was during the time in the book. Oh, by the way this is taken place in England. In england there are people that treat Christopher in certain ways that make me question how England is. Overall, I believe this discussion was better than last weeks. The book is great and I would recommend this book to everyone I know who would want to read a book.
