Substitutes

Lately we have had many substitutes, which is not bad so far. I have noticed many things about these substitutes. First of all, it is always the same substitute compared to my other school. In my old school we would always have different substitutes for some reason. Also, people from ASTI are very respectful to the substitutes. In my old school, there was little respect for substitutes, do not get me wrong, many people did have respect for the substitutes. Finally, I noticed that the substitutes are very loose, or not as strict. This surprised me because I thought that ASTI would have gotten strict substitutes so we would not get off task.

I hate it when people try and take advantage of substitutes like if they do not even know the rules of the school. In my old school, taking advantage of substitutes continuously happened throughout the year. I admit it I also used to take advantage but sometimes there is a limit. Some people take it too far. Some people try and impress their friends to think that they are hard (as in tough). Kids play tricks on substitutes that makes them look like fools. To me it is funny how some people try and be tough but fail at it. I believe it would be more embarrassing to fail at being tough than being completely quiet. Another thing that I find weird is when a person is concentrated at doing their work so much that they are alone or are not talking. This is weird to me because school is also about having some fun and not work all the time.

The following things are good about having a substitute. We get to chill and not work as hard as usual. We also get to have more fun or be able to talk more, but not always. When we are working, we get to work in our own pace, which is great because if we wanted we can do our classwork as homework. These substitutes have been awesome, and I look forward to met them again.

Here is a qoute that i can relate to from Nawara's blog,

When I think about school, I imagine homework, quizzes, breaks, gossip, etc. When I came to Alameda Science and Technology Institute, I learned that I was in a smaller environment and in an area that is full time work, work, work. When it was my first day of school, all I was thinking about was college. I felt like I was not in a high school where they have rallies, dances, and football games. I was in a community where we succeed in higher educational standards. As a freshman, I was scared. I felt like I was not going to succeed even though I was accepted, I did not feel like I was ready. While the year went on, I became to fully understand the requirements and expectations to succeed as an ASTI student. I felt more relaxed. As a result, teachers should console the students about future classes so they can arrange themselves to be successful.

I can really relate to this quote on the freshmen year. The first two weeks of high school were hard. The first days were about expectations from ASTI and the rules of ASTI. The hardest part of high school is it is very different from middle school, different teaching styles and more work. For example, my Modern World History class is very different from my History class from last year. High school also gives a lot of work. Compared to middle school it is a lot. Last year I only took about 1 hour for all my homework, and now I take about 3 hours or more to finish homework. It is hard to adapt to ASTI's ways, but I have to at least try.

My first month in ASTI has been pretty good. Like I said before, the first two weeks of school were for adapting. I am still trying to adapt, but after two weeks, I think that I have adapted a little. The work is a lot but I can keep up with it. One think about having a lot of homework, is that I am really busy on weekends which is why I do not turn in quality work that is assigned on weekends. Overall, ASTI is a good school with high expectations which iI will meet later on.

   I found this awesomely honest quote from Christian's Blog on his reflection of "Odd Girl Out" by Rachell Simmons 

Once in 7th grade at Lincoln Middle School, my best friends and I were eating lunch. Some 8th graders were walking in our direction and they began to make fun of one of my best friends over the look of his lunch bag. We fought verbally. They mainly picked on me because I was standing up to them. They called me racist names and wanting to know what race I was. I fought back at them with making fun of them for thinking I was a certain race even though I was not. Yes, I used humor to get back at them. At the time I felt it was the best way to defuse the situation. By the end of the day many people knew I had stood up to this group of bullies. When this happened, I felt a mix of many strong emotions, sadness, guilt, anger, and even happiness. When I stood up to these people, I felt strong, and powerful and in control. However, after the incident, I felt guilty for stooping to their level by calling them names.

   I really enjoyed reading this quote because I could relate to this.. This too has happened to me, I reacted and felt the same way as him. I also agree that getting on a bullies level is not necessary, sometimes it isn't worth it. I chose this quote because I went through a scene just like his, and the fact that he didn't use violence. I enjoyed reading this reflection and this quote.

        

ASTI Constitution:

7.    Strive to understand where other people are coming from; be empathetic

8.    Take responsibility for your actions and words

10.   Resolve conflict peacefully

   I believe this quote falls into at least two categories in the ASTI Constitution out of the ten.

 This quote falls into number 6 (Speak up for yourself and for others) and slightly number 10 (Resolve conflict peacefully). These two laws would fit in to the quote perfectly for the following reasons.
   
   Speak up for yourself and for others for e means to help yourself and other people when they are being mistreated. This is important because you can help someone out from having a miserable day. This quote goes into #6 on the ASTI Constitution because the quote is about how he stood up to a group bullies for his friend. Standing up for yourself and for others is very important. It is important because most of the times, standing up for someone will prevent bullies or will stop from people mistreating others. I admire that he stood up for his friend because not many people stand up for others, and that way you can tell if they are true friends. This law is needed on the Constitution so people can help each other out. 
   
   Resolve conflicts peacefully for me means to not use violence to solve conflicts. This is important because to keep a school safe is by not using violence. This quote belongs to #10 on the ASTI Constitution because he didn't use violence to solve the conflict. Even though the bullies were trying hard to make a move, he kept his cool and didn't use violence. I admire that he kept his cool because if that was me, I think I would have done something differently. Violence is what leads conflicts into bigger issues that keep getting bigger if you keep on going. This law on the Constitution is very much needed as a reminder so that no one will uses violence to solve problems.
